SJR7 proposes a constitutional amendment to protect reproductive freedom in Nevada and passed the state legislature today.

Carson City, NV — Today, the Nevada Legislature passed a resolution to add protections for reproductive freedom into the state constitution (SJR7). SJR7 protects every Nevadan’s right to make decisions about their own body and family, including a person’s right to access birth control, prenatal care, birthing care, postpartum care, vasectomy and tubal ligation, miscarriage management, infertility care, and abortion care. SJR7 will need to pass again in the 2025 legislative session, after which the amendment will appear on the 2026 general election ballot.

The effort is led by Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro and the Nevadans for Reproductive Freedom Coalition, led by Planned Parenthood Votes Nevada and NARAL Pro-Choice Nevada. It will protect Nevadans following the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade.

NARAL Pro-Choice Southwest Regional Director Caroline Mello Roberson released the following statement in response:

“Nevadans have been protecting our right to abortion here at home long before the Supreme Court overturned it on the federal level—and we aren’t stopping now. Thank you, Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro, for championing this historic legislation. NARAL Pro-Choice Nevada and our 48,000 members are ready to get it over the finish line for the 4 in 5 Nevadans who want the government to stay out of personal decisions about reproductive freedom. ”

Nevadans have long supported reproductive freedom, and new polling from Breakthrough Campaigns shows broad support for adding these protections to the constitution:

  • Over 60% of voters support abortion being legal in all or most cases, including 67% of Latino/a voters, 67% of Black voters, and 71% of Independent voters.
  • 4 in 5 voters want the government to stay out of the decision, including 83% of Latino/a voters, 86% of Black voters, and 88% of Independent voters.
  • All tested versions of the ballot condensation have broad and strong support. They all start at or above 60% yes—and remain at or above 50% in every point in the poll, even after voters have only heard messaging against the potential ballot.
  • This is true whether we’re on the ballot in 2024 or 2026: each ballot receives over 60% yes vote initially and ends with at least 60% yes vote after hearing messaging from both sides, regardless of the electorate.
  • Across all tested versions of the ballot, more than half of Independents, nearly two-thirds of voters under 45, and nearly 7 in 10 Black and Latino/a voters are voting yes.
