Washington Today, NARAL Pro-Choice Nevada announced its endorsement of 26 incumbents running for re-election  in the State Senate and Assembly. As one of the few places in the nation with a voter-affirmed right to abortion, Nevada may play a critical regional role in filling in gaps in access to care should Roe v. Wade be overturned.

NARAL Pro-Choice America Southwest Regional Director Caroline Mello Roberson released the following statement:

“NARAL Pro-Choice Nevada is proud to endorse this slate of reproductive freedom champions for Nevada’s legislature. These candidates have made it clear that they will never stop fighting to make sure every person can access the care they need—just as Nevada voters did in 1990, when we overwhelmingly approved a referendum that locked into law protections for abortion access. NARAL and our 44,000 members across the Silver State look forward to mobilizing voters to elect champions in November who will protect and advance our fundamental freedom to decide.

These endorsements come as NARAL Pro-Choice America is ramping up its work to elect candidates up and down the ballot during a critical moment in the fight for reproductive freedom.  NARAL recently announced a partnership with Planned Parenthood Action Fund and EMILY’s List to collectively spend a historic $150 million on the 2022 midterms to elect reproductive freedom champions up and down the ballot across the country. Soon, the U.S. Supreme Court will issue its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization—a case about Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban that directly challenges Roe v. Wade. A recent leak of the Court’s draft majority opinion confirmed that the Court is poised to overturn Roe and end the constitutional right to abortion as we know it

If the landmark abortion rights decision is undone, 28 states—including three that border Nevada—are expected to take action to prohibit abortion outright. If Roe is overturned and states move swiftly to ban abortion, Nevada is predicted to see a 63% increase in women of reproductive age whose nearest abortion provider would be in the state—from 110,000 to 180,000.
