NARAL & Planned Parenthood Statement:

Nevada women won’t be fooled, Adam Laxalt does not fight for us

Anti-choice Republican candidate for Governor, Adam Laxalt, is attempting to re-brand himself as a champion for women. This is after a troubling interview where Laxalt said he would “look into” rolling back abortion rights for Nevadans. Laxalt’s attempts to walk back that statement ring false for Nevada women once they learn of him using his role as Attorney General to sign Nevada on as supportive of multiple amicus briefs restricting reproductive rights and not standing up for health care for survivors of sexual assault.

As leading Nevada women’s advocacy organizations,Planned Parenthood and NARAL have issued the following statements in response to the empty words that Adam Laxalt is attempting to use to explain away a record of fighting against the rights of Nevada women and families:

“Adam Laxalt will do irreparable harm to women and families if elected as Governor,” said NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue. “From his troubling statements threatening to roll back our right to choose if, when and how to parent to his actions signing Nevada on in support of restrictive abortion measures, it’s clear that he will not be a champion for Nevada women’s bodily autonomy.

“Steve Sisolak has consistently demonstrated that he trusts Nevada women to make their own reproductive health care choices free from government interference. Steve is the champion that Nevada women need in Carson City. NARAL will be working overtime with our more than 43,000 battle born members across Nevada to ensure he is elected as the next Governor.”

“Women won’t forget Adam Laxalt’s abysmal record. Laxalt has said he wants to look into banning abortion for Nevada women, has supported fake women’s health clinics that deceive pregnant people, and supported policies that strip women of their rights, freedoms, and control over their own bodies, said Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President for Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

“Nearly 14,000 patients rely on Planned Parenthood health centers for care in Nevada, and they know Steve Sisolak stands with them. For that reason, this November, voters will be with him at the ballot box.”

Here’s what you need to know about Adam Laxalt:

  • Adam Laxalt would threaten access to birth control. He supports a dangerous religious refusals rule that could allow pharmacists to deny patients access to birth control based on their personal objections. The rule has been denounced by major medical providers and professionals.

  • Laxalt’s first major action as attorney general was to sue the Obama administration for expanding Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which protects immigrant youth who were brought to the U.S. as children from deportation.
