Leaked Docs Show Urgent Need for Gov. Sandoval To Act on Birth Control Bill

As Trump Moves to Restrict Access, A Bill to Protect Nevadans’ Contraception is on Gov’s Desk

With new details being leaked about the Trump administration’s plan to roll back the historic birth control expansion of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), NARAL Pro-Choice Nevada today called on Governor Sandoval to act on legislation to protect contraceptive access. A NARAL-backed bill to protect birth control access in Nevada passed both state legislative chambers with bipartisan support and is now on the governor’s desk awaiting his signature.

“President Trump is threatening to roll back the greatest expansion of reproductive healthcare in a generation. That’s why NARAL members across Nevada are calling on Gov. Sandoval to sign a bill to protect our access to birth control,” said Caroline Mello Roberson, state director of NARAL Pro-Choice Nevada. “No family should face an unplanned pregnancy because they couldn’t get to the pharmacy on time. Yet, President Trump is trying to make it harder to access the birth control that Nevadans count on to plan our families. That’s why NARAL members have pushed state leaders to protect and expand access to contraception, including allowing women to access up to 12 months of birth control at a time.”

The NARAL-backed legislation would ensure contraception remains affordable by codifying the “no co-pay” requirement of the ACA into Nevada law. The proposal also expands access to birth control by allowing for a woman to access up to 12 months of contraception at once. NARAL has launched an online ad campaign to urge passage of the bill and hosted a series of “Feminist Road Trips” which brought Nevadans from across the state to Carson City to advocate for the passage of this important legislation. The bill passed the State Assembly last week after already clearing the State Senate.

Having pushed state leaders to act on a bill to protect our access to birth control, NARAL’s Caroline Mello Roberson recently wrote about her experience as a pregnant woman leading the fight for reproductive freedom in Nevada

NARAL Pro-Choice America and its network of state affiliates are dedicated to protecting and expanding reproductive freedom for all Americans. NARAL works to guarantee that every woman has the right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. In recognition of its work defending our constitutional right to choose, Fortune Magazine described NARAL as “one of the top 10 advocacy groups in America.”
